What has been your favorite Christmas gift?

I've had a lot of special gifts for Christmas, but one of my most memorable gifts that I ever received was a new…car engine!

My family moved to Flint, Michigan in the summer of 2000.  Flint is the birthplace of GM, and is known as "Buick City" so, when I was looking to buy a new car, I bought… a Buick!  It wasn't actually new.  It was a used station wagon with 50,000 miles, but it was nice and clean with plenty of room for our four kids!

That winter I was heading to a pastor's conference near Cadillac, Michigan when my engine "threw a rod."  You don't have to be much of a car expert to know that's bad! Fortunately, I had AAA so I had my car towed back home to get it fixed.  Then I got the bad news! My car needed a new engine and it was going to cost about $2,000!  I didn’t have that kind of money! How was I going to get it fixed?

Well, the word got out at church that pastor had car trouble.  While I was still trying to figure out how I was going to come up with the money to fix the car, an unmarked envelope with $2,000 was dropped into my mailbox at work!  I was humbled.  I was in tears.  It was a gift that I really couldn’t pay back and yet…., it was a gift that I really needed.  I was able to track down my benefactors to say, "Thank you."  It was a group of men who had gotten together to help out a friend who happened to also be their pastor. They had shared a gift worth far more than $2,000.  They had shared the priceless gift of love…

Jesus brings us an unexpected gift too.  We may not really appreciate it, but it's THE GIFT THAT WE NEED!  It's Jesus' gift of love. Even though we may not even realize it, we NEED His forgiveness and He shares it with us freely.  We may have to do a little digging around in the Bible to realize who this special gift of love is from, but it's His gift to us nonetheless.  Jesus' gift of love is not really anonymous, but it IS exactly what we need.  No we can't afford it, but we really need His mercy.  So what do we do?  We can't pay God back, but we can share the gift.  We can share His love with others!  "This is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atonement for our sins." 1 John 4:10

Advent Blessings!
