Celebrate your new life in Christ!

I’ve got this plant in my office. It’s just a common office plant. Something that you might see at a bank or a doctor’s office. It’s a “philodendron.” Just a fancy name for a common plant. But this plant is special to me because it was a gift from my Aunt Frances. I should really take care of it better, but it’s one of those plants that is kind of indestructible. I normally practice “benign neglect” with this plant. I generally ignore it, but when I see it wilting I will water it. If I see it growing too long, I will trim it. I’ve had it for 20 years, so it’s grown very long at times, vining around through my books on my book shelves. I’ve severely pruned it, uprooted it added dirt and replanted it a number of times, but it’s still back in the same teapot that I received 20 year ago.

One of the reasons that this plant is special to me is because this plant reminds me of my baptism. Even though the plant is very special to me sometimes I forget about it.  With my baptism, even though I know that it is very special to me, sometimes I forget about the fact that I am baptized.  I just take it for granted and forget about it…How is it possible that I could forget what was the most life changing event in my life?

St. Paul writes, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life!” (Romans 6:4) Your baptism is a BIG DEAL! It’s life giving! Paul continues, “For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his!” (Romans 6:5)

Your baptism is a big deal, because it is a sign of Jesus’ love for you. “(Jesus) saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit!" (Titus 3:5)

This New Year, every day of your life, you can be renewed and restored as you celebrate the life giving work of the Holy Spirit through your baptism. Celebrate your new life in Christ!
