This Sunday we celebrate with one of God's most special gifts...Mom! Mother's Day is about giving thanks for all of the things that Moms do for us: Changing diapers, fixing meals and kissing boo boos, not to mention helping with homework, doing laundry, and hugging us when we feel bad.But Mother's Day is much more than just some day to buy mom flowers and get her a card from Hallmark. Mother's day is an opportunity for you to thank God for all the blessings that he has given you in your mother. Maybe you did not grow up in a very "happy" home. Maybe your mom was not a paragon of motherly virtue or a model of behavior. Maybe your mom was not June Cleaver or Carol Brady, but nonetheless, your mom is a gift from God.We are to honor and respect our moms NOT because they deserve it, but rather because that is what God calls us to do. "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you." (Exodus 20:12) Part of the honor that you may owe your mother is to forgive her. Why, because mom deserves your forgiveness? No! You are called to honor and forgive your mom, because your Father God has forgiven you? Did God forgive YOU because you deserved it? No, God has forgiven you because His Son, Jesus earned it for you...And don't forget the promise that God provides. "Honor your father and mother"-which is the first commandment with a promise- "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." (Ephesians 6:2-3) From God's perspective, it just makes a lot of sense to respect mom. This Mother's Day, honor your mother. If you can, stop by for a visit. If she's far away give her a call. If she's in heaven say a prayer of thanks to God for His special gift to you. In any case, just remember to say, "I love you, mom..."Mother's Day Blessings,Pastor Maske
