The Scripture is Fulfilled! Luke 4:16

The Scripture is Fulfilled! Luke 4:16

Have you ever had a hard time getting up for church?  “Do I have to?” We’ve all been there, right?!

We’re like the son who overslept on Sunday morning. He’s snoring loudly when his mom comes to wake him up for church. “I don’t want to go!” the son exclaims! Mom replies, “Son, you have to go to show that you are faithful to God!” The son responds, “I don’t want to go! It’s the same thing every week, “Jesus loves you!” In exasperation, the mom responds, “Son, you HAVE to go! YOU’RE THE PASTOR!”

OK, it’s an old joke, BUT we’ve all been there! It’s Sunday morning and we really don’t want to go to church because we’d rather been doing something else! That’s our sinful nature at work. Your sinful nature knows what’s good for it- keeping you from God’s Word and away from Jesus! Going to church on Sunday should be the most natural thing in the world for us, but it isn’t…

It’s not natural for us but it is for Jesus! In Luke 4:16 we read where “it was His custom” for Jesus to go to synagogue. On this particular Sabbath Day, Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.  And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”  (Luke 4:18-21)

Wouldn’t it have been AWESOME to hear Jesus speak those words?! This truth is that you CAN hear Jesus speak His Gospel words to us EVERY TIME we join in worship! Jesus “proclaims liberty to the captives” of sin every time we hear God’s word! Not only can we hear God’s Word, Jesus actually IS God’s word! Jesus is “The Word made flesh.” Jesus steps into our worship and fulfills His promise to you each and every time we hear His Word faithfully proclaimed in worship!

Sunday is NOT about what you are doing. Worship is about what Jesus has done and continues to do for you as He offers you His love and forgiveness. Jesus is always in church, always in His Word, always crucified and risen for you! Jesus is always fulfilling His promise of forgiveness, life and salvation for you!

Living in the Lord’s favor!
